How to Choose the Right Ribbon for Your Receipt Printer
Share
Introduction
A receipt printer is a working tool: it prints all day, in a shop, a restaurant, a counter or a kitchen. When its print starts to fade, the problem is often the ribbon, not the printer. This guide explains, in plain terms, how to find the right ribbon for a receipt or point-of-sale (POS) printer, using the listings on Accuprint Québec.
No technical background is needed. You only need one thing: the exact model of your printer.
1. Start with your printer model, not with the ribbon
The surest way to choose is to start from the printer itself:
- Look for the model name on the printer: on the front, on the top, or on the label underneath or at the back.
- Note the brand and the full model, for example "Star SP-700" or "Epson TM-U220" — a partial name is often not enough, because one brand makes many printers that take different ribbons.
- Then search Accuprint Québec with that exact model name. Each product listing states which printers it fits; check that your model appears in that list before ordering.
If you cannot find your model on the printer, check the manual or the old ribbon cartridge itself: it often carries a reference number, such as ERC-30, ERC-23, SP200 or IR71. That reference is the second-best starting point.
2. The most common receipt-ribbon families on Accuprint
Receipt printers mostly use small inked ribbon cartridges. A few families cover a large number of printers. The examples below are all products actually sold on Accuprint Québec — check the product page for the full compatibility list of each one:
- Epson ERC-30/34/38 — a very common family for Epson receipt printers, including models in the TM-U200 and TM-U300 series listed on the product page. Sold as a single ribbon and as a 12-pack.
- Epson ERC-23 — another widely used Epson family, listed as fitting many POS printers from several brands. Sold as a single ribbon and as a 6-pack.
- Star SP200 (SP200 / RC200 / T77 / SP500) — for Star SP-200 series printers and the other models listed on the product page, including some Casio, Citizen and credit-card printers.
- Star SP300 — for Star SP300 series printers and the other POS systems listed on the product page, including Samsung, Panasonic and TEC models.
- Star SP-700 — for Star SP-700, SP-712 and SP-742 printers, as listed on the product page.
- Citizen IR71 (IR71 / DP700) — for Citizen and Panasonic printers listed on the product page, including Citizen CBM-810 and DP700 models, as well as some Casio and Sharp models.
- Verifone 900 — for Verifone 900 printers and the other POS and payment printers listed on the product page.
These families look alike at a glance, but they are not interchangeable: a ribbon that fits a Star SP200 will not necessarily fit a Star SP300, and an ERC-23 is not an ERC-30/34/38. Always match the reference to your printer model.
3. Single ribbon or box? Read the format before you order
This is the most common ordering mistake, and it is easy to avoid:
- A listing titled "Single" sells one ribbon.
- A listing titled "6-pack" sells six ribbons, and a "12-pack" sells twelve.
- The price shown is always for the format stated in the title — a box price is not a single-ribbon price, and a single-ribbon price is not a box price.
If you are replacing a ribbon for the first time, a single unit lets you confirm the fit before stocking up. If you run a busy counter and you already know the right reference, a box is usually the more practical choice.
Also check the colour: most receipt ribbons are black, but some listings offer black/red or purple variants. The variant is shown on the product page — choose the one that matches your printer and your receipts.
4. When should you replace a ribbon?
Replace the ribbon when you notice one of these signs:
- The print is getting pale or uneven, even though the paper and the printer are fine.
- Some characters or lines are missing on the receipt.
- The print looks fine at the start of the roll and fades as the day goes on.
A faded receipt is hard to read for the customer and for your own records, so it is better to replace the ribbon a little early than to keep printing receipts that fade. Keep one spare ribbon on hand if your printer is used every day: that way a worn ribbon never stops your counter.
5. A quick checklist before you order
1. Write down your printer's brand and exact model.
2. Search that model on Accuprint Québec.
3. Confirm that your model appears in the product's compatibility list.
4. Check the format: single, 6-pack or 12-pack.
5. Check the colour variant.
6. Order online at any time — Accuprint Québec is an online shop, open 24 hours a day, with delivery in Canada and the United States, and orders processed in 1–3 business days with tracking.
